FSU’s All-Time Alumni Football Team (Offense)

By Jaime Garcia Montes on July 26, 2017

In the wake of a Kentucky University basketball alumni charity game set for August 25, in which the best players in recent school history compete against each other, Bleacherreport.com had an interesting interview with the university’s current coach, John Calipari.

In the interview, they asked Calipari what his ‘dream team’ of Kentucky alumni basketball players would be. Hypotheticals in sports are something that always intrigues me, just because sports can change so radically by the smallest moves and decisions.

Now, this dream team for Kentucky’s basketball team would be understandably amazing, as it is considered a basketball school. Each year the university backs up that title by producing some of the NBA’s top talent. If this hypothetical were focused on Florida State University, it would make the most sense to focus our dream team on our football team, as FSU is considered a football school that develops plenty of NFL talent.

The idea of forming all-time collegiate alumni sports teams is very fascinating to me. It makes me wonder how FSU would stack up against other schools across the country. In order to get an idea of what an FSU football alumni team would look like, I have generated an all-time alumni roster.

Here is what the offensive side of our team would look like.

Quarterback: This position is one of the tougher ones to choose, simply because FSU has had some phenomenal QBs in our school history. Between Charlie Ward (FSU’s quarterback from 1989-1993), Chris Weinke (FSU’s quarterback from 1997-1999), and Jameis Winston (FSU’s quarterback from 2013-2014), FSU has produced three Heisman Trophy winners.

Charlie Ward’s case is that he led Florida State to four consecutive bowl games, one of which was FSU’s first National Championship win. Weinke’s case is that he lead FSU to our first undefeated National Championship win, as well as breaking several school career passing records. Lastly, Winston’s case is that he had one of the best individual seasons by any FSU athlete ever, winning the Heisman award and National Championship, all while never losing a game.

Verdict: Charlie Ward

Running Back: Warrick Dunn

Dunn is an easy choice for this position. Although the school has seen flashes of greatness in Greg Allen, Greg Jones, and Dalvin Cook most recently, no one has run the ball for Florida State the way Dunn did. With a school record of three consecutive 1,000 yard rushing seasons and a school leading 37 career rushing touch downs, no one has come close to matching his statistics.

Wide Receiver: Fred Biletnikoff

Before having a Super Bowl winning, Hall of Fame career with the Oakland Raiders in the NFL, Biletnikoff was a star for FSU from 1962-1964.

Wide Receiver: Anquan Boldin

There are a lot of receivers in school history that had better numbers than Anquan, although he finished with an impressive 21 career receiving touchdowns after four seasons at FSU. The reason why I would select Boldin as the wide receiver lining up opposite Biletnikoff is that Boldin proved his ability to excel at the collegiate level, as well as have an amazing professional career in the NFL, much like Biletnikoff.

Wide Receiver Honorable Mention: Randy Moss*

Randy Moss couldn’t stay out of trouble as a college student, which led to his dismissal from FSU after being on the team as a red shirt freshman. Moss went on to have one of the greatest NFL careers for a receiver after attending Marshall University. Although he never played in an actual game for the Seminoles, it’s cool to know that Randy Moss was once a ‘Nole, and that is enough to get him an invite to this alumni team.

Tight End: Nick O’Leary

As an integral piece of FSU’s National Championship winning team in 2013, O’Leary showcased all of the necessary skills to be an amazing tight end during his four years at FSU. Finishing his collegiate career with FSU in 2014, O’Leary set the school record for most career receptions for a tight end.

Offensive Tackles: Walter Jones and Alex Barron

Jones is the best offensive lineman in school history. Through two seasons as a Seminole, he only allowed one sack. Jones went on to appear in the Pro Bowl seven times and get inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame as a professional. Alex Barron was selected to the All-ACC and All-American teams in his final two years as an offensive tackle for the Seminoles in 2003 and 2004.

Barron went on to have some success as a professional in the NFL where he played seven seasons for three teams.

Offensive Guards: Jamie Dukes and Jason Whitaker

Both Dukes and Whitaker earned All-ACC as well as All-American honors while playing the offensive guard position for the Seminoles. Neither player saw the success from playing with FSU transition into the next level.

Center: Bryan Stork

Although former Seminole center Clay Shiver had a more impressive collegiate football résumé than Stork, I feel confident that Stork would be the right choice for this all-time team. Like Anquan Boldin, Stork has shown the ability to succeed at both levels, and not only perform well but win.

Stork was a huge piece of FSU’s 2013 National Championship team, playing at center for Jameis Winston, and then he went on to be a huge piece for the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl winning team, playing center under none other than Tom Brady. An all-time great team could definitely use some of that championship culture.

That’s it for the offensive side of the team. Be sure to check out my selections for the defensive side of the ball. Let me know if you think there is anyone that should have been on this team or you believe doesn’t deserve to be on this team in the comment section down below!
