Wavy Eyebrows: Weird Craze or Hot New Trend?
Makeup has been perhaps the hottest topic of the past few years; we’re seeing male CoverGirl models, middle schoolers can contour as well as the Kardashians, and makeup artistry has become a booming field for amateurs and internet stars. Along with the new makeup craze has come the desire for aspiring makeup artists to stand out from the crowd and push the limits of what we expect from everyday makeup looks, which is exactly what this strange new wavy brow trend has done in the 48 hours it’s taken to surface and begin trending on Instagram.
Wavy eyebrows, also known squiggle brows, are taking the internet by storm with already over 1,100 posts on Instagram using the hashtag #wavybrows and counting. That’s right, people are using makeup to make their eyebrows look like squiggly lines. Interestingly enough, for some of the users that tried the new look, it’s hard to deny that they actually slay the fuzzy caterpillar appearance of the wavy brow. Even better, many men hopped on the trend train and blew their followers away with the zigzag facial accessory. Although wavy brows seem to be taking off and fast, not everyone loves the look.
Some Instagram users are calling wavy brows “sperm brows” because of their uncanny resemblance to the tail of a sperm. I mean, can we really blame them? There has been lots of pushback against the new craze with hashtags like #spermbrowsmustdie and #wavybrowsarefugly, and the main complaint from the internet, especially makeup artists, is that most of the photos are clearly photoshop, not makeup. I’m sure what we’re all wondering most is how the trend got started in the first place!
It’s hard to say how the trend became popularized, but it was easy to track down the original creator of the look. We can all thank Instagram user beccaboo318 for creating the first prominent wavy brow for her “mermaid look” way back at the beginning of March! Yep, the wavy brow was originally this makeup artist’s creative way of resembling water for an under-the-sea inspired makeup design, and to be honest, her look is absolutely stunning. Lucky for Becca, she’s been widely recognized by the Instagram community as the wavy brow OG and she’s getting (most of) the credit that she deserves.
It’s amazing and interesting to see what all of the talented makeup artists and amateurs of the internet can creatively design, but this one is a bit out there. Although playing around with an art is how artists get remembered and innovative styles come to be and the original design for the wavy brow is beautiful, I think it’s safe to say that most of us hope the trend is a flash craze, and the idea of squiggle brows as an everyday look dies quickly.
